Women’s body faces a lot of changes during pregnancy. Sometimes, the changes may lead to frustration or distress. Most women have a healthy and forthright pregnancy with no chief issues. Every woman experiences different during her pregnancy. Constipation, aches, pains, discomfort and insomnia are some common health issues faced throughout the pregnancy.
Morning sickness is the most common and one of the early pregnancy problems. It usually does not cause any problem to the unborn baby. The symptoms of morning sickness are nausea and vomiting.
- drink plenty of fluids(water) half n hour before and after having a meal.
- Try to avoid fatty, spicy and fried food.
- Eat a smaller meal. But remember, don’t skip a meal.
- Eat healthy snacks like fruits, cheese or yoghurt before going to bed.
- Avoid those foods whose smell make you feel sick.
Backache in pregnancy
In the early stage of pregnancy, it is very common to have a backache. During the pregnancy period, the ligaments in your body become softer and stretch which help you to prepare for labour. this can put pressure on the joints of your lower back and pelvis area. This leads to backache.
- Do not lift heavy objects while you are suffering from backache.
- wear comfortable flat shoes.
- Get plenty of rest, mainly in later pregnancy.
- Massage or warm bath helps you to get rid of backache.
- Do not stand or sit for a long time.
- Use a firm mattress for sleeping.
The problem of bladder and bowel
During the pregnancy period, many expecting women feel problems like frequent urination, constipation and incontinence. These problems occur because of hormonal changes in the body.
Constipation means stool is not passing smoothly as you normally do. It causes your stool hard, clumpy, large or small. Sometimes it becomes very painful and uncomfortable.
- Eat food which is rich in fibre such as vegetables, fruits, beans.
- Drink lots of water.
- Keep yourself active and walk regularly.
Peeing a lot starts from early pregnancy and it will continue throughout the whole pregnancy.
- If you go to urinate at night, try to avoid drinks in the late evenings.
- Drink plenty of non-alcoholic, caffeine-free drinks
Incontinence is a very common problem during or after pregnancy. sometimes it may happen you are unable to control pee while they cough, laugh, sneeze or just stand up from anywhere. This problem is temporary.
Changes in skin and hair
lots of hormonal changes take place during pregnancy. Nipple and area around them go darker. Skin colour may also go darker. Hair growth also increases during pregnancy. It may be possible that u might face hair loss after baby birth.
It is very common to feel tired, faint and weak. This is because of hormonal changes occurring in your body during pregnancy. Cause of faintness is low oxygen level.
- Get up in slow motion after sitting down.
- If u feel faint while standing, sit quickly
Headache is the most common problem of pregnancy. you may feel a lot of headache around the third month of pregnancy. If you feel frequent headache during pregnancy, don’t go for any pain killer, consult your doctor.
There are many other reasons of headache during pregnancy such as you are not getting adequate sleep, lack of fluids, having depression, low blood sugar.
- Go for good sleep and rest properly and relax.
- Eat regularly well-balanced diet.
- Massage your shoulder and neck.
Cramp means sudden, sharp pain in calf muscles or feet as your muscles contracting very tightly. Leg cramps are normal but very uncomfortable part of pregnancy. There are many reasons listed for leg cramps while you are pregnant like gaining extra weight, change in metabolism, vitamin deficiency and so on.
Regular exercise is good for pregnant women so it may help her to get through the physical changes happened throughout the pregnancy.
Indigestion or heartburn problem
Heartburn is common in pregnancy. This happens because of hormonal changes and baby pressing against your stomach. you may feel soreness or uneasiness in the stomach. It is a burning pain in the throat or chest.
- Eat small meals and avoid eating just before going to bed.
- Avoid drinks and foods that cause heartburn.
- Do not smoke.
- Do not take caffeine.
- Go for a walk after eating dinner.
Many expecting mothers get swelling in feet, ankle and legs. Swelling can be painful, make your shoes and sandals fitted. Your body produces more blood than usual to help your baby grow and then uterus presses on and to some extent block the veins that return from your legs to your heart. So blood inclines to pool in your legs. Mostly swelling happens in later pregnancy.
- Do not stand for a long time
- Wear comfortable footwear.
- Use less salt in your meal.
- Sleep on your left side which helps the blood to return to the heart.

Vaginal discharge and bleeding
Most women have the problem of vaginal discharge during pregnancy period. This is relatively normal. Cervix and vaginal walls get softer and discharge increase to avoid any type of infection transfer from the vagina to the womb.
In the last stage of pregnancy, discharge amount increases and can be confused with urine.
In the last week, your discharge contains smudges of thick mucus and some blood. It is a sign that the body prepares for birth. Healthy vaginal discharge should be clear, white, and should not smell unpleasant. If the discharge is coloured and smell unpleasant or feel itchy, it may be possible to have a vaginal infection
During pregnancy, your body produces more blood for a growing baby. If you don’t intake the right amount of nutrients and iron, your body might not able to produce the number of red blood cells and you may face a problem of mild anaemia. As a result, severe anaemia increases the risk of premature birth, the birth of a baby with low weight or postpartum depression.
- Eat iron-rich foods such as fish, eggs, meat, beans.
- Consume food which contains high folic acid such as dark green leafy vegetables, orange juice.
- Take food having vitamin C such as citrus fruits and fresh vegetables.
- Take your multivitamin and mineral pills suggested by your doctor.
- Pregnant women must always follow a healthy diet plan
Varicose veins are common and harmless to pregnant women. It happens when the uterus put on weight to the vein that carries blood to the heart from your feet and legs.
- Walk regularly.
- Put an eye on your weight.
- Wear maternity hose.
- Don’t put your feet in high heels.
- Do not cross your legs.
- Always try to sleep on the left side because it increases the oxygen level in the body.
Though most pregnancy problems are common and experienced by pregnant women, whatsoever changes you are experiencing, always keep your doctor updated about those changes and it is important to maintain a recommended balanced diet for expecting mothers.
